The Evening Train to Kyoto
The Evening Train to Kyoto diary example
7:15 p.m., somewhere outside Nagoya
The train left Tokyo so smoothly that I only noticed we were moving when the platform began to slide away. Across the aisle, a businessman opened a carefully wrapped box of dinner. I had bought coffee and a sweet bun at the station, which suddenly seemed like poor planning.
For the first hour, the view alternated between warehouses, compact neighborhoods, and brief flashes of open country. Laundry hung from narrow balconies. Baseball fields glowed under white lights. Then the sky deepened from pale blue to ink, and the windows began reflecting the passengers back at themselves.
I spent most of the journey reading, but I put my book away half an hour before Kyoto. Arriving somewhere new feels too important to miss, even when the approach is mostly darkness and scattered buildings. The carriage grew quieter as people checked maps and gathered their bags. I felt that familiar mixture of tiredness and alertness: the body wanting a bed, the mind wanting every detail.
When the announcement finally came, everyone stood at once. I followed the crowd onto the platform and smelled rain on warm concrete. Kyoto had not shown me anything yet, but the evening already felt distinct from the one I had left behind.
